Mentoring

Rewards of Becoming a Mentor

Over the past 9 years, over 800 people have been Stand and Deliver Mentors. Over 95% of them have never taught school or been a part of a formal mentoring program. There are many rewards enjoyed by some or all of these folks. A few of them are:
Helping a deserving student pass The MCAS Exam and making a high school diploma possible
Making a new, and in some cases life long friend
Learning about a different culture
Playing a part, however small, in the emergence of a New Lawrence
Expanding a child’s horizons to include college and helping prepare for college
Many fun moments and events
The satisfaction that comes with making a difference in the life of a child

Here’s what a few Stand and Deliver mentors and students had to say about the experience:

“There are times when meeting with Idalys is the highlight of my week”.
Lee Bluemel – Minister, North Parish Church

“It’s been a joy for me to work with and get to know such a dedicated student.”
                    Dave Cook – Malden Mills

“Ihab is a very smart and dedicated young man. I hope to work with him until he enters a top-notch college.”
John Lenhoff – Physical Sciences, Inc.
                   Editors note: He did.

“When I come to the program, I come to learn new things that I can use in school.”
Francis Victoria, LHS, 2-year Stand and Deliver student

“My mentor is someone I look forward to seeing every week!”
Thao Nguyen, LHS, 2-year Stand and Deliver student

“Without my mentor, I wouldn’t have done as well on the MCAS Math test.”
Jaime Quezada, LHS, 4-year Stand and Deliver student, scored Advanced on 10th grade MCAS
